Visual Phonics
Visual Phonics eliminates the ambiguity of English orthography by using consistent visual and kinesthetic cues that represent the sounds of English.
Target Group
Any student who is learning to read who may not have access to all the learning modes (special needs, DHH, ELL), those struggling to read or those who read below grade level.
Content Area
Reading and writing (i.e. spelling).
Language Approach
Visual Phonics doesn’t provide direct language learning. It’s assuming that the student already has a foundation in a language.
There is no instruction in ASL, and there is no opportunity for translanguaging. This is all done in English (spoken, printed, or through visual phonics cues that correspond to the sounds of English). Visual Phonics can be used with any spoken language. Also, it can be used to differentiate between the sounds in a student’s home language vs. the language spoken in the classroom.
