Early Intervention

Setting Language in Motion: Family Supports and Early Intervention for Babies Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

This web-based product is a collaborative effort between the Clerc Center and The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program of Boston Children's Hospital for early intervention providers, educators of deaf children, early childhood specialists, allied professionals, parents, and other caregivers. Seven modules are provided to share information critical to promoting early language acquisition for young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. This product is available in both American Sign Language, spoken English and Spanish with closed captions.

Fifteen Principles for Reading to Deaf Children 

Provided is information on best practices for how to read aloud to deaf and hard of hearing children based on research on how Deaf parents read to their Deaf children. These principles were developed to give parents and teachers skills and strategies for reading aloud in American Sign Language. The resource is provided in print and American Sign Language.    

Sign Language Use for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Babies: The Evidence Supports It (PDF)

This document, developed by Tiara V. Malloy and disseminated by the American Society for Deaf Children and the Clerc Center, discusses the evidence supporting the use of sign language with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

School-Age Children

Classroom Interpreting For Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Series of Guides for Professionals and Families

This series, developed in collaboration with Dr. Brenda Schick from the University of Colorado-Boulder, is for school administrators, educators, educational interpreters, parents, and students. It provides essential information on how to ensure effective interpreting support for children who are deaf or hard of hearing in mainstream schools and programs. The tips for parents and students are available in Spanish.

Educating Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: A Guide for Professionals in General Education Settings

This three-module resource was designed at the Clerc Center in collaboration with Educational Regional Center 20 in Texas for educators in general education settings. The modules provide introductory information about deaf and hard of hearing students, instructional considerations for educators, and information about educational planning (IDEA, Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act, ADA).

Students with Cochlear Implants: Guidelines for Educational Planning

This product is a comprehensive set of guidelines for professionals to use for educational planning and parent involvement regarding the design and implementation of appropriate programs and services for children using cochlear implants. Note: This product is an update to Children with Cochlear Implants Who Sign: Guidelines for Transitioning to Oral Education or a Mainstream.  

Demonstration Schools 

Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) are the demonstration schools of the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University.

Deaf Students with Disabilities Network

This on-line network is designed to provide resources, tools, and information to parents and professionals who have, or work with, deaf and hard of hearing students with disabilities. The site includes discussion forums designed to promote information sharing and ongoing opportunities to engage with others living and working with deaf and hard of hearing students with disabilities.

Odyssey magazine
