Educational Planning for Students with Cochlear Implants

Guidelines for Educational Program Planning Geared towards professionals who work with students who use cochlear implants, this webcast discusses the knowledge and tools needed to meet the unique needs of those students. Dr. Susan Schatz and Dr. Mary Ann Kinsella-Meier, from the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, focus on factors shown in the evidence as critical to the language, academic, and social-emotional development of students using cochlear implants. They also discuss considerations in educational planning for students in either general education settings or schools for the deaf. Presenter bios

Dr. Susan Schatz

Susan J. Schatz, PhD, is an educational research associate in the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center’s Planning, Development, and Dissemination office on the campus of Gallaudet University. She manages internal and external research requests and conducts research projects related to the Clerc Center’s priorities and initiatives, with emphasis on the implementation of evidenced-based practices and educationally related practices for use with deaf and hard of hearing students in classrooms and schools.

Previously, Schatz taught for a number of years as an American Sign Language/English bilingual classroom and itinerant teacher in various educational settings. She was also a teacher-supervisor for several years. More recently, Schatz was coordinator of instructional support at the Clerc Center’s Kendall Demonstration Elementary School.

Dr. Mary Ann Kinsella-Meier

Mary Ann Kinsella-Meier, AuD, is a project manager in the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center’s Planning, Development, and Dissemination office on the campus of Gallaudet University. She manages product development that meets the mandates of the Education of the Deaf Act: to develop, evaluate, and disseminate innovative curricula, instructional technologies, and strategies. She also manages mission-furthering work in the areas of strategic planning, research, evaluation, project development, product dissemination, technical assistance, training, and outreach.

Kinsella-Meier was the project manager overseeing the resource (Students with Cochlear Implants: Guidelines for Educational Program Planning) shared during this webcast. Previously, she led the expansion at the Maryland School for the Deaf to extend educational services to those students who had access to learning through spoken English. She coordinated and established cochlear implant services, including the provision of cochlear implant programming capabilities on both campuses. Kinsella-Meier is co-author of a book on sign language for audiologists and speech-language specialists as well as a contributing author to a book on aural rehabilitation and communication therapy.
