The deaf and hard of hearing students at La Mesa Middle School, in La Mesa, Calif., joined Peter Cook, an internationally renowned poet and entertainer, for a full day as he taught and demonstrated techniques in using American Sign Language to craft poetry and stories.

Heather Lightfoot, an illustrator for World Around You, has been drawing for as long as she can remember.

Screen painting is a folk art in Baltimore. Dee Herget, one of the masters of this craft, shows off some of her work.
 * Deaf Student Plays Helen Keller (Cover Story) 79 kb
Shira Grabelsky, who is center stage on the World Around You cover, was a 19-year-old freshman at George Washington University. She won a role in The Miracle Worker, produced by Arena Stage, one of the major professional theaters in Washington, D.C. Grabelsky played the role of Helen Keller, the deaf-blind individual who became a renowned advocate for deaf and blind people in the early 1900s.

Shawn Richardson is the man behind some of the clever cartoons in the
Silent News. Richardson, an artist who graduated in 1992 from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, also works as a freelance graphic artist doing
illustrations and graphic design. In addition, he works full time for Preservation magazine at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C.

greeting cards appropriate for Americans—and for deaf people around the world.
