Bridges to Youth Leadership 2000

Twelve students from KDES and twelve students from MSSD participated in a program called "Bridges to Youth Leadership 2000" given by Howard University. The purpose of Bridges 2000 is to implement a service delivery model for the economically disadvantaged and minority youth with disabilities. This program provides role models, mentorships, and work orientation that enables the participants to increase their social and work related skills. The training project offers experiences for young people which are designed to bring about increased confidence, information about the world of work, and a positive self-concept.

The students will meet on the first Friday of each month from November through May. The first meeting will be held at Howard University's Blackburn Center Hilltop Lounge from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Each month, the students will participate on teams and be given assignments which will focus on careers in various areas of interest. In addition to assignments, they will also participate in special events, conferences, and field trips. On Friday the 7th, the students had orientation, picked team leaders, were given assignments, and met the Senior Project Director from the "Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute."
