Lego Robotics Teacher TrainingThis workshop trains teachers in the fundamental technical skills necessary to mentor students to design and build working Lego robots. This workshop will explore use of the robotics technologies in the math and science classroom as well as in after/outside school activities. The robots can be programmed to perform simple tasks and complex routines. Teachers will learn how to facilitate students in developing and honing programming skills as they devise strategies for their robot to win in challenging competitions. Robotics attracts a wide range of students, including many students not normally interested in the study of traditional math, science and computer technology. A sport-like spirit of competition motivates students to develop the essential career-related technical skills of designing, strategizing, building, and testing while having fun. Student Lego robots can be entered in a nationwide sport-like competition called Botball. Botball tournaments involve teams from elementary, middle and high schools as well as teams associated with various local/national programs (4-H, Boys and Girls Clubs, Scouts, Girls Inc., technology programs). At Botball tournaments student teams enter their “player" robots
and experience the thrill of victory and agony of defeat in robot-vs-robot
competition. (http://www.botball.org Selected short videos of past Botball tournaments are available for
