Counseling, Assessment, and Social Work Services (CASWS) is a part of the Director of Operations and Programs unit at the Clerc Center.
A strong foundation in social skills and socio-emotional development is necessary for a student to be successful in the classroom, in the residential education program, and in life. CASWS professionals integrate actively into the academic and residential educational programs to support the goal of promoting positive mental health. With a focus on prevention, psychologists, counselors, and social workers, trained to work with deaf and hard of hearing children, are available on site to provide direct services to students and their families. These specialists work as a team to assess a student's needs and implement services. Specialists work closely with families to help identify and coordinate more extensive services with private practitioners in the community as needed.
Student services staff working in unison with members of the instructional staff to enhance and support the Clerc Center priorities of developing and implementing programs to promote family involvement, literacy development, and student transition, provides student services. Student services staff focuses on including literacy development into service delivery models by incorporating instructional theme units, vocabulary, and materials while addressing IEP/IFSP objectives. Student transition needs are intimately connected to activities to assist with effective movement from one instructional level to another, and from school to home to community. Student services personnel collaborate closely with teachers and other school personnel to assess and document the needs of children and their families as well as develop and support implementation of realistic and functional plans to meet these needs.
Through out the year, student services staff provides workshops and outreach assistance to professionals, parents, school personnel, community agencies, and preparatory programs from around the country and world. A broad range of issues is addressed related to programming needs, assessment and services for deaf and hard of hearing students and families.
