Introduction to TecEds Reviews

Purpose

Software to Go (STG) was established in 1985 to serve as a software lending library and clearinghouse for sharing information and resources among educational programs and agencies serving students and clients who are deaf or hard of hearing. The lending library ceased operation in July of 1998. In its place we have set up an on-line, interactive database, TecEds Reviews, where we hope parents and educators of deaf individuals will input reviews of software that they have found useful for their children, students or clients.

This project is not affiliated with any commercial entity or other non-profit organization of the same name.

Who May Enter Data

Any parent, teacher, educator, administrator, or student who is concerned with the educational needs of deaf or hard of hearing learners may enter data into the TecEds Reviews database. You must first complete our on-line registration form. If you are not involved in any aspect of the education of deaf or hard of hearing individuals, please do not register. The purpose of the database is to provide evaluation information that focuses on the specific needs of deaf individuals. Review information on software that is not applicable to those needs should not be entered in this database.

What Data May Be Entered

We are looking for reviews of commercially available software; that is, software products that anyone can easily purchase for use in their homes, schools, or organizations. These include shareware and subscription Web sites (e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica), but not freeware nor out-of-print products.

How to Enter Data

First, become familiar with the evaluation criteria when reviewing software for deaf and hard of hearing individuals if you have not already done so. Take a look at our evaluation guidelines.

We also have instructions and definitions for our data entry form. We ask that reviewers provide as much data as possible on the title they are reviewing. This helps all who use the database. You can edit your review after it has been entered into the database, but you cannot edit data for reviews that you did not submit. You can enter and edit comments for software that other reviewers have submitted.

Who May Search the Data

The Search Page is open to anyone; however, only registered reviewers may add and/or edit comments.

Acknowledgments

We would like to thank all the participants in the original Software to Go project who evaluated software from 1985 to 1998. Their most recent reviews were used to get this database started.

We would also like to thank the members of the Educational Software Preview Guide Consortium for their hard work since the early 1980's that has resulted in the annual publication of highly regarded software guides designed for general education audiences. Their terminology and definitions were used to structure and describe the software in this Web site. We have modified it wherever necessary to fit the special needs of our audience. Special thanks to Ted Perry and his staff at The California Educational Computing Consortium whose on-line version of the The Educational Software Preview Guide served as a model for our site.
