(For
the full listing of the SRP book bags, see SRP
Book Bags and Bookmarks.)
The
SRP book bags include:
- a
popular children's story,
- a
videotape of a deaf adult signing that story,
- an
activity guide with ideas related to the story, and
- a
bookmark: "Tips for Reading to Your Deaf Child."
The book bags are an integral part of the SRP. Families participating
in the SRP use the stories on videotape and the activities included
in the book bags after tutoring sessions as a reference and for practice
in signing the story of the week. It is strongly recommended that
families participate in their local SRP whenever possible. Through
the SRP, families gain confidence in their signing skills and in their
abilities to support their deaf and hard of hearing children's emerging
literacy skills.
However, we recognize that not all families have a SRP site in their
area. Families who cannot participate in the SRP can still benefit
from using the book bags. (For more information about the availability
of SRP training sites, visit our Training
and Professional Development Web site.)
It
is recommended that families purchasing book bags also buy a copy
of the Reading to Deaf Children: Learning
from Deaf Adults videotape and manual. This videotape and manual
set is based on research on how deaf parents read to their deaf
children. It explains 15 principles that form the basis of the SRP.
The principles guide parents and teachers in ways to promote literacy
development. To demonstrate the variety of deaf people in the United
States, the signers in the videotapes are African American, Asian,
Caucasian, Hispanic, and Native American deaf adults. The stories
come from a wide range of popular tales from different cultures.
