Families
Count!
Makes
Math Fun for the Whole Family
Kindergarten through Eighth Grade Students and Their
Families, Teachers, and School Administrators.
Families
are essential partners of their deaf and hard of hearing children
as they learn and grow. Families Count! is a new program available
from the Clerc Center that brings deaf and hard of hearing students
and their families together for a fun evening. The Families Count! Program is an adaptation of the FAMILY MATH Program, developed by the EQUALS Program at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley.
The
carefully planned sessions help families and their deaf or hard
of hearing children:
-
communicate about math,
-
perform hands-on activities that reinforce math concepts in the
areas of geometry, measurement, number sense, fractions, and time,
and
-
enjoy a colorful, appealing math-related storybook as told by
an adult in American Sign Language (ASL).
A Families Count! session usually begins with a relaxing meal at which
students and their families eat together and socialize. After the
meal, participants watch a videotape that demonstrates how to communicate
math concepts in ASL, followed by fun group activities where families
play math games. The evenings end with a math-related children's story
either read live or viewed on videotape.
There
are three different levels in the program. These are based on the
actual grade level of the deaf or hard of hearing students:
-
Level 1 is for kindergarten through grade 2 ,
-
Level 2 is for grades 3 through 5, and
-
Level 3 is for grades 6 through 8.
These levels and activities correspond to the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards. Families Count!
combines learning and communicating about math with family fun. The Clerc Center is profoundly grateful to the EQUALS/Family Math Program for their generosity and help.
