Family-School Relationships: Concepts and Premises

Barbara Bodner-Johnson, Ph.D., and Marilyn Sass-Lehrer, Ph.D.

An important mechanism for facilitating family involvement in the child's education is the family-school relationship. Researchers and teachers, in general, say that the nature and characteristics of the family-school relationship influence schooling outcomes. This paper focuses on four dimensions of the family-school relationship: the philosophical or conceptual basis for family-school relationships; family involvement; social-emotional and community-based support; and information, education, and skill development.
