Gallaudet Board of Trustee Members Learn About the Accelerated Reading Program

Members of the Gallaudet Board of Trustees visited the Kendall School Library to learn more about the Accelerated Reading Program that is currently used in the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD).

Before the Board arrived, AR teacher, Yetti Sinnreich, prepared the students for the visit.

Students from KDES and MSSD welcomed the Board members.

Board members viewed a PowerPoint presentation about the program.

The Students (acting as teachers) approached a Board member (acting as the students) and helped them select a book. Sometimes the “teachers” read to the “students.”

Sometimes the “students” read by themselves. The “teachers” helped out as needed.

After the “students” had read the books, they went to the computer with their “teachers” to take a test. One “student” asked her teacher for help on an answer. The “teacher” told the “student” to “think for herself”.

When the “students” completed their tests, the “teachers” congratulated the “students” if their scores were good or encouraged them to try harder next time if their scores were not so good. They were given a printout of their test results.

Afterwards, Katherine Jankowski, Dean of the Clerc Center congratulates the students and the Clerc Center teachers and staff for a job well done. The Board members had a much better understanding of how the Accelerated Reading program works and why the KDES and MSSD students are so excited and motivated by the program.
