Five deaf and hard of hearing students and their chaperones attended the Winter Deaflympics held in February in Salt Lake City, Utah, as part of a collaboration between the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and the 16th Winter Deaflympics Organizing Committee. The students—G. Perrusquia and K. Humphrey from the Illinois School for the Deaf; G. De Naples from Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, North Carolina; S. Winesburg from the California School for the Deaf in Fremont; and K. Brooks from the Kansas School for the Deaf in Olathe—were among the top winners in the Gallaudet National Essay, Art, and Sign Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

The students, who won for their entries in the writing, art, or sign categories, and their parents or chaperones had access to all Deaflympic competitions, ceremonies, and events. Students also attended ceremonies where they were presented with their own Deaflympic medals. In addition, Perrusquia and Humphrey enjoyed an interview with Dr. Donalda Ammons, general secretary of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf. De Naples and Brooks met Dr. Robert R. Davila, Gallaudet University president, for a celebratory breakfast.

Last fall, Dwight Benedict, Deaflympics Organizing Committee chairperson, and Dr. Katherine A. Jankowski, dean of the Clerc Center, signed an agreement that enabled the winning students to attend the 16th Winter Deaflympics. The Clerc Center developed a Deaflympics educational website, The Clubhouse, and used the Olympian theme of “going for the gold” in the annual Gallaudet National Essay, Art, and Sign Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

“As a teacher, I’m glad that the Clerc Center was able to help us communicate with the nation’s students to learn about the Deaflympics,” said Geraldine Francini, vice-chair of Human Resources of the Deaflympics Organizing Committee, who with Maryland School for the Deaf teacher Andrea Feldman initiated the collaboration.

“We were pleased to provide exciting material that informed deaf and hard of hearing students about the Deaflympics while simultaneously promoting their skills in literacy, technology, American Sign Language, English, and the arts,” said Timothy Worthylake, contest co-coordinator. “We are thrilled that five of our nine top winners were able to take advantage of their awards and attend the Deaflympics with their families and chaperones. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Mandated by Congress to develop, evaluate, and disseminate innovative curricula, instructional techniques, strategies, and materials, the Clerc Center serves deaf and hard of hearing children and youth from birth through age 21. The Deaflympics, organized under the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, includes the national organizations of deaf athletes from 94 countries around the world.
