The first issue of Celebrate!, published as schools opened in September, is available now. In it, students use writing and art to speculate on what kind of career they expect to have as adults. Over 200 students from all over the United States sent entries to the Clerc Center that responded to the questions: “What will you be doing when you are 30 years old? How are you preparing for it today?” A panel of judges selected the winning entries. The art is currently displayed in virtual galleries on the Clerc Center website. It was also exhibited on the Gallaudet University campus throughout the summer. In the 25 colorful pages of Celebrate!, readers will find deaf and hard of hearing students who shared big dreams. For example, essay contest entrant Kira Lee Roberts, from Fulton, Missouri, wrote that she hopes to run a horse ranch for children with special needs. Art contest entrant Gabriela Perrusquia, from Chicago, Illinois, drew herself as a classroom teacher. Other students saw themselves in such positions as an optometrist, a dolphin trainer, an illustrator, an electrician, and a wildlife preservationist. Jesse Ascioti, from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, echoed other students’ hopes, writing, “I want to study the past so that I can help make a better future.” In February 2007, Celebrate! will feature next year’s contest-winning entries. The theme of the contest is “What does ‘going for the gold’ mean to you? How do you go for the gold in your life?” The deadline for entry is October 31, 2006, and the Clerc Center is collaborating with the Winter Deaflympics Organizing Committee to offer an expanded contest. An additional category—that of American Sign Language—has been added for this year and all place winners will receive free tickets to the 2007 Winter Deaflympics. Winners of the essay contest will earn scholarships to the postsecondary program of their choice, all art will be displayed on the web in the Clerc Center’s virtual art gallery, and other prizes will be offered as well.
