KDES has been selected as one of five schools to participate in the Star Schools Program.

The Star School Program is a multi-state distance learning project that is funded by a five-year U.S. Department of Education Star Schools grant and is sponsored by the New Mexico School for the Deaf. The purpose of the grant is to implement and test a proposed bilingual/ESL model for deaf students acquiring and learning two languages, ASL and English. The project, through a convergence of satellite, Internet, and CD-ROM technologies, utilizes an engaged learning approach to improve:

• instruction in math, science and reading;
• teacher pre-service and staff development, and
• literacy development for adults, deaf children, and others who are typically under-served.
