For information on Portfolios for Student Growth training opportunities and/or materials, or to request additional information, contact: Portfolios.Clerccenter@gallaudet.edu. -- Winners Discuss ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ in New World Around You -- The Spring 2004 World Around You, a Clerc Center magazine for deaf and hard of hearing teenagers, has been posted online. The issue includes the winning essays of the Gallaudet National Essay Contest and the art contest winners’ work; this year’s topic for both contests was “Random Acts of Kindness.” The issue can be found at: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/WorldAroundYou/Spring2004/index.html or http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/WorldAroundYou/index.html. Other Clerc Center training events include on-line courses through Gallaudet’s Graduate School and Professional Programs (GSPP) on the topics of “Cochlear Implants & Children: Considerations for Implantation and Educational Planning” taught by Debra Nussbaum and Suzanne Scott, “Literacy—It All Connects Online” taught by David Schleper, and “Reflective Teaching for a Peaceable Classroom” taught by Betsy Meynardie and Patricia Ross. In addition, literacy workshops of the Clerc Center have also been combined for one week of training called the Summer Literacy Institute, designed especially for parents and caregivers, educators, and other professionals who work with deaf and hard of hearing students. The Summer Literacy Institute will take place August 2-6 and include: Literacy—It All Connects, Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults, Leading from Behind: Language Experience in Action, Read It Again and Again, and more.
