This is the E-Newsletter of Gallaudet University's Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, which works for the education of deaf and hard of hearing students throughout the United States.

-- Fall 2003 World Around You Added Online, Other Pages Revised --

The Fall 2003 World Around You, a Clerc Center magazine for deaf and hard of hearing teenagers, has been posted online. The issue includes articles about deaf people succeeding, such as “Can Deaf People Succeed in Science? You Bet!,” “Sports—Making a Career from a Love of Basketball,” and “A Writer Talks About Getting Started.”

Other changes to the World Around You site include the addition of magazine cover images to the archives (http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/WorldAroundYou/archives.html) and a separate index page for the Teacher’s Guide http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/WorldAroundYou/teachers.html).


-- Clerc Center Collects Opinions on Critical Needs in Deaf Education --

The Clerc Center is collecting public input on critical needs for deaf and hard of hearing children in three priority areas: family involvement, literacy, and transition from high school to postsecondary education and employment. Comments about these critical needs are being collected through an online questionnaire that can be found at: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/About/info-request.asp. No personally identifying information will be included with responses and the results will be summarized in a future issue of Odyssey (http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/Odyssey/index.html).


-- Athlete of the Month, Booster Club Among Changes to Athletic Pages --

The athletic Web pages of the Clerc Center have been revised, with the names added of the new Athletes of the Month from the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. Kristen Egnatovitch and Adam Brimmer were selected for October 2003. “Athlete of the Month” can be found at: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/Sports/aotm/index.html.

The list of Booster Club members was also revised. It can be found at: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/Sports/booster.html.

Flag football highlights from the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School athletics program were posted online. They can be found at: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/kdes/flagfootball.html.


-- Transition, Team Activities Discussed in Clerc Center Connection --

The September and October issues of the Clerc Center Connection, a monthly publication produced by the Clerc Center’s Training and Professional Development and Publications and Information Dissemination offices, have been posted online. Story topics include team activities, transition, cool Web sites, Amos Kendall, and American Sign Language information. -- TecEds Contest, Winners of Mr. & Miss Onyx Contest Announced --

A contest was announced in which teachers and staff working with deaf and hard of hearing students can help build TecEds Reviews, a national database of educational software, and enter to win educational software.
