Come in and hang out in our Clubhouse, a place for learning more about the Winter Deaflympics. This is the 16th Winter Deaflympics. That means it is the 16th time that deaf and hard of hearing athletes from around the world have gathered to compete against each other in winter sports. The first Winter Deaflympics were held after World War II. Now they are held every four years. The coming Winter Deaflympics will be hosted by the United States from February 1-10, 2007, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

How are athletes picked? How many countries send teams? How do the Deaflympics relate to the “hearing” Olympics? What is the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf? You will find out this information when you visit our Clubhouse.

In our culture section, you will learn about the nightly coffeehouse, paintings, and other cultural events that will be part of the next Deaflympics. In the people section, you can learn more about the coaches, athletes, and fans that make the Deaflympics possible.

In our contest section, you will learn about the exciting opportunity to win free Deaflympics tickets and scholarship money. The reason is that this year the Gallaudet National Essay, Art, and Sign Contest committee is teaming up with the U.S. Winter Deaflympics Organizing Committee to offer deaf and hard of hearing students a chance to use their talents to write, create artwork, or sign a presentation on the theme of “going for the gold.”

The Deaflympics are a long and treasured tradition with deaf and hard of hearing people.

We hope that in our Clubhouse you learn more about the upcoming Winter Deaflympics, the Deaflympics, and international sports for deaf people—and have a good time doing it!
