Headquarters
The headquarters for the Deaflympics will be in the Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. The Little America Hotel was also the headquarters of the 2002 Olympic Games! The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf announced that the hotel is already half booked, so if you want to attend the Deaflympics, you better register soon!!!
What does headquarters mean? A headquarters is the main location of an organization. At the Little America Hotel, the headquarters for the Deaflympics, you will find information, maps, tickets, and answers to your questions. It will also be a wonderful place to watch people from all over America and the world meet and converse in different languages.
Coffeehouse
The organizers of the Deaflympics plan to set up a coffeehouse where deaf people from all over the world can meet, talk, and learn about each other.
How do deaf people from different countries learn about each other? How do they communicate? Mostly they use gestures and International Sign Language.
International Sign Language is not a sign language like American Sign Language or French Sign Language. International Sign Language consists of signs that deaf people invented so that they could understand each other at international meetings. Because the first international meetings of deaf people were in Europe, many international signs come from European sign languages.
Deaflympics—What’s in a name?
The original name of the international competition for deaf athletes was the International Silent Games. In 1967, the competitions were renamed World Silent Games and later the World Games for the Deaf. By 2001, the name Deaflympics was officially approved! This word—combining “deaf” and “lympics” (“Olympics” without the “o”)—satisfied both the International Olympic Committee and the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf.
