Why did you choose MSSD?
Wally: “My mainstream experience was tough,
especially working through an interpreter. I wanted to learn more.
My friend Edward, who goes to MSSD, and his mom told me about the
school. My mother and I came to visit, and I decided to apply.”
Billy: “My dad was an MSSD grad. He strongly encouraged me
to come. I finally decided to give it a chance and visited the campus.
I transferred for my sophomore year and after just two days, I loved
it! It was a done deal. My brother is now here, too.”
Kimber: “My mom told me about MSSD. She wanted me
to transfer to learn more about deaf people. I had a deaf cousin,
William Byrd, who was in Children of a Lesser
God.
What do you most like about MSSD?
Wally: “At MSSD, I’ve learned so
much. I get a lot of help, the staff is very supportive, and communication
is easy here. In public school, I felt isolated. Here I am much
more involved than in other schools.”
Billy: “The education here is more challenging,
than at my old school. I like that. Here I have a choice
on weekends to stay in or to get involved with different
activities. I can be involved in sports, travel with teams
to different states, and be involved in matches. I like
how there are more opportunities for friendship.”
Kimber: “There are lots of sports
you can be involved in here, and I like
the dance program, too. The internship
program is really unique. I’m interning this
year in the Education Department at Gallaudet.
It’s
much easier here to socialize and communicate through
sign language. I like being able to shop at
places off campus like at
Union Station and go on trips to see museums in
D.C.” |
