“Slam Dunk With Books” Read-In Event

Reading magazines |
Read-In was an exciting and exhausting night. About 32 students from
Team 6/7/8 showed up. The first two hours, we scribbled graffiti on posters,
read magazines and books, and took NBA Trivia quizzes. We munched on pizza
and chicken wings. We all had the privilege of having Dr. Katherine Jankowski
come and read “Salt in His Shoes,” a story about Michael Jordan’s
dream.
Unfortunately while waiting for the arrival of the Wizards, we got a
call from the Assistant Coach notifying us of his family emergency, which
caused all the players to cancel their visit. Instead, we had a blast
with EJ’s father, Mr. Corporal, who joined us for a challenging
game. Students were split into two teams between Dwight and Mr. Corporal.
The objective of the game was to see who would score 10 baskets first.
The loser would have to do five push-ups. After three games, Mr. Corporal's
team beat Dwight’s team twice resulting in ten more push-ups as
a penalty!

Stacey |
We closed our evening with a movie “Like Mike” with popcorn
and soda. Bedtime was at 11:00 however the night was quite restless. From
the boys’ corridor, “It was hard for me to sleep, the boys
wrestled with each other” said Jake. Xian went around and tickled
everyone’s ears with feathers. “It was so hot upstairs that
I was restless,” commented Sean H. The girls were terrified of Alicia’s
horror stories that it scared poor Renee when she noticed a strange figure
on the roof.

We want to thank Jim and the “Read-In” committee for planning
this fun event, Eloise, Gabrielle, and Maureen for setting up the area
and helping out, Dwight, Jim, Merlinda, and Stacey for sleeping over and
supervising
the students. A special thanks to the support of Family Education Unit
and Evelyn and Jene’s mothers for helping us out with food and supervision.
Thanks to Dr. Katherine Jankowski and Stacey for their read alouds. Thanks
to Mr. Ed Corporal, as well, for providing the students a basketball clinic.
