"Meeting of the Three People" Expo

contributed by Jim Barrie, Social Studies Teacher

Students made a variety of projects during the First Quarter. The projects included posters, PowerPoint presentations, essays, writing pieces, crafts, and displays. Students had a "ticket" or checklist of activities to complete. They identified topics to gather information about. Subjects for the projects included aspects of Indian, European, and African culture in between 1400-1600. They recorded progress toward completing 3-5 activities on their tickets. The teacher used a rubric to evaluate each activity. At the end of the quarter, all student work was presented in our First Quarter Exhibition. Visitors marveled at the wealth of information presented and the fine artistic talent of the students. Dream catchers and tepees set the mood for the exhibit. Posters hung form the ceiling inviting all to learn about the three peoples. All students were presented with certificates of participation. Some students received additional recognition for outstanding work in poster, display, craft, PowerPoint, and essay activities. Our exhibition theme for the Second Quarter is: Travel to the Colonies. Students will establish a travel agency to inform all about colonial life. Hope you can visit Kendall School in January to see this exhibit.

The deset dwellers in the Southwest created beautiful and practical homes from mud. They formed walls out of building block made from a mixture of clay, water, and straw and covered with smooth layers of mud.
