Math Olympics: Let The Games Begin!
contributed by Sandy Paradis
On Friday, April 11th, we had an Olympic blast! We held a Math Olympics
competition with our team. We set up an Olympic village. Teams of six
students each competed for "gold,” “silver,” and
“bronze" prizes in the following events: long jump, javelin/straw
throw, discus/paper plate throw, basketball/paper ball toss, computer
arcade, build a house of cards, two-minute mental math drills, shot put/cotton
ball throw, and one-minute jump rope endurance. The teams were really
into the competition, but no one lost any points for unsportsman-like
behavior. Way to go Team 6/7/8!
Mark Schwartz, Sandy Paradis' intern, was our Olympic commissioner and
score keeper. The scores were announced after lunch. The students were
thrilled to pick prizes from three options: a pass from homework, a “go
to the head of the lunch line” pass, or a free snack from the vending
machines. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and a great spirit was shown
by all!
