Phones of the FutureVideophones Come to SCSDBSouth Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind (SCSDB) is setting up technology so that students can talk to their parents on their telephone-in sign language. The new technology transmits visual energy in a way similar to that used by telephone lines to transmit sound energy. "This is a giant leap for us," said SCSDB's Director of Information Technology Douglas Holleman. "it is important that we help our students achieve their full potential." The South Carolina Public Service Commission provided the $40,000 funding to set up the pilot project, and the school is continuing to seek funding partners. Deaf WAY IIFun for the World-and You!Gallaudet University announces Deaf Way II, a celebration of deaf culture around the world by deaf people around the world. Deaf Way II will be held at Gallaudet University during the summer of 2002. "The experience of being deaf in hearing society is shared by deaf people everywhere," said Dr. Harvey Goodstein, professor of mathematics. In 1989, the first Deaf Way brought together thousands of deaf people, their families, and friends on the Gallaudet University campus. "Deaf Way II will give us the opportunity to heighten public awareness of deaf and hard of hearing people's accomplishments and potential," said Goodstein. "More importantly, it will allow us to focus on and to be more prepared for what the future holds." Cultural ExchangeAround the WorldMobility International USA (MIUSA) specializes in providing cultural exchange with other countries for disabled American young adults. Every year, MIUSA sends young leaders into other countries to help with community projects or other events.
