When Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD)
students saw Deafywood III, they rated it not PG
or G, but Dfor Deaf!
"Four stars!" said Austin
Bradford, KSD middle school
student. "Deafywood III was
the best performance I have
ever seen. I really enjoyed
watching it. It made my
stomach tight from laughing
too much."
There was a lot of humor
based on deaf culture. Some of
the hearing staff
and visitors in the
audience were
overwhelmed.
Nevertheless,
the students
loved the
scenes, with
jokes, puns and
wild antics by
Lauren Abbott, John Maucere, Mashie Franklin, Lauren Teurel,
and Norman Weiss. Gales of laughter swept the
audience.
John Maucere's deaf hero, SuperDeafy, was in
the second part of the show, and the students
continued to use SuperDeafy's "I need your
help!" signal by crossing two "I love you" hands
across their chests with both arms after the play
was over.
About 340 people were in attendance, including
honors and drama students from Danville
High School and the middle and high schools in
Boyle County. The students enjoyed the performance
so much that they demanded an encore
and Deafywood III was performed again the following
day!
