National Gallaudet Essay Contest

What Is Your Biggest Challenge?
How are you facing it?

Last year, over 230 deaf and hard of hearing teens from around the world responded to these questions. As you can see from the article on page 12, their responses were very exciting. So exciting that we decided to ask the same question again.

The rules are a little different, and the prizes are even better! There will be more lucky and skilled winners-and more money available for the winners to use in their selected college or post secondary training program. There are special awards for students who want to attend Gallaudet University, too!

So read on-and read carefully!

Topic for an Essay: Writing up the Biggest Challenge

All of us face challenges every day. Teens face special challenges. Deaf and hard of hearing teens sometimes face unique challenges. Think about the challenges you face in your life. What is your very biggest challenge? How do you face it? Tell us!

Prizes

All contest participants will win certificates of meritorious entry.

All place winners and their teachers will win free subscriptions to World Around You and World Around You-Teacher's Guide.

Place winners will win scholarship money for college.

$1000 first place *
$500 second place *
$300 third place *
$100 two honorable mentions *

* All scholarships will be doubled for winners who choose to attend Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. (They may be more than doubled depending on other information provided by the applying student).

Rules

  • Entrants must be no older than 19 years old.
  • Four copies of each entry must be submitted.
  • Entries may be faxed, e-mailed, or sent through the U.S. mail.
  • All entries become property of Gallaudet University; they may be published in any format.
  • Each copy of the entry must have the writer's name, address, school name, school address, and home and school telephone number, and original, copy 1, copy 2, or copy 3 written clearly-or a copy of the filled out entry coupon-on the first page.
  • Entries must be at least 1 page and no more than 4 pages, typed, and doubled spaced.
  • Entries must be received in World Around You's office or postmarked by January 11, 1999.
  • Entrants may submit multiple entries, but they may only earn one award.

Procedures

  • All entries will be coded on reception and judged anonymously.
  • Entries will be screened by a committee prior to judging.
  • Judges will meet to make final unanimous selections.
  • Winners will be announced and winning entries will be printed in the May/June issue of World Around You.

Timeline

  • October 11: Judges selected for review, screening, and final selection.
  • January 11: Four copies of all entries must be postmarked or in World Around You's office.
  • January 21: Entries are screened by a screening committee.
  • February 7: Top entries are sent to judges.
  • February 21: Judges meet to finalize award winning entries
  • March 7: Winners are announced.
  • May: Winning entries are printed in World Around You.
