Gallaudet National Essay Contest
for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

The deadline for this contest has passed. Look for information about the 2003 contest in the September issue of World Around You.

Every year, Gallaudet University offers an essay challenge to deaf and
hard of hearing students. This year s essay theme:

What Should Hearing People Know about
Deaf and Hard of Hearing People and Why?

Gallaudet University is pleased to announce its theme for the fourth National Essay Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. This theme concerns hearing people, deaf people, and hard of hearing people and what deaf and hard of hearing teens would tell hearing people about themselves.

What would you tell hearing people about deaf and hard of hearing people? What kind of information do you think they should know?

Consider the world s many groups of hearing people for example, parents, filmmakers, students, doctors, lawmakers, teachers, and business people.
What would you tell these people about deaf and hard of hearing people?

What would you tell your hearing friends?

Remember that after you write what hearing people need to know, you need to write why you believe they need to know it. And don t forget to give us evidence. For example, if you write that hearing people need to know that deaf and hearing people are equally smart, you must tell
a) why you think that they do not believe this, and
b) why you know this is so.

The evidence may come from books or from your personal life, but don t forget to include it.

Send your essay with your answer and evidence to us at World Around You.
