Success In the Mainstream!

Kimberley Garcia works with young deaf students in her community, teaches a sign language class for hearing high school students, and serves as president of the Junior Colorado Association of the Deaf. A senior at West High School in Denver, Colorado, Kimberley uses an interpreter in class and has a 4.6 grade-point average. She has won many awards, including her recent selection as a Regional Winner of the Hispanic Heritage Youth Leadership Award for Community Service.

Kimberley came to Washington, D.C. and visited Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES), where she was interviewed by World Around You and KDES students. Here is an interview.

WAY: How many students competed in the Hispanic Heritage Youth Leadership Award for Community Service? Were you the only deaf competitor? Kimberley: Over 200 students competed in my area. I think I was the only deaf competitor.

WAY: Were you surprised you won? What is your prize? Kimberley: Oh yes, I was surprised to win! My prize is $1,000 in money toward college.

WAY: Is this your first visit to Gallaudet University? Kimberley: Oh yes. My first time in Washington, D.C., and my first time at Gallaudet. I am excited to be here.

WAY: What are your goals? Kimberley: I would like to be a lawyer and work in the criminal justice system.

WAY: Why do you want to be a lawyer? Kimberley: Because I want to help people.

WAY: Do you like living in Denver? Kimberley: Oh yes. It is beautiful. There are many mountains, and you can ski.

WAY: Do you have any deaf brothers and sisters? Kimberley: No. I am the only deaf person in my family.

WAY: Are there many deaf students in your school? Kimberley: No. There are 2,000 students in my school and only two are deaf.

WAY: Do you have your driver's license? Can you drive? Kimberley (laughing): Yes.

WAY: Do you have any advice for other deaf students? Kimberley: You can do it, too! Work hard in school and do your best-and you will be a winner, too!
