The best player on the boys' soccer teams in the nation's schools for the deaf may be a girl! Samantha Turner, a junior at the Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro, Vermont, is known to coaches, teammates, and soccer fans as "the Austine Tornado." Austine coach Sean Maloney not only recommended Samantha for Deaf Girls' Soccer All-American honors, but also for the Deaf Boys' Soccer All-American honors. If Samantha is named to the boys All-American soccer team, it will be the first time a girl has won the honor. "Samantha has set the boys' soccer world on its ear," said Coach Maloney. In the 1998 soccer season, she led her boys' team with 24 goals. Six of those goals helped Austine win. A typical Samantha goal? Dribbling the ball through, over, and past four defenders before giving it a final kick to score. Samantha scored four goals against Clarke School in the first matchup. She was winning game scorer in six games and assisted in two winning games. Her 24-goal output is the second best output seen at Austine School. Leading scorer on the boys' team, she holds the Austine record for points by a female player, is the only female among the top 20 scorers, and ranks third place overall. She is only the fifth Austine player to reach the 20-goal mark in one season. Two other girls are on the boys' soccer team, helping to make the Austine Arrows a top contender on any soccer field. Samantha-successful on-and off-the soccer field.
