World War II-Glimpse of Deaf Lives

USA
Deaf Soldiers

Even though they were not permitted to join the army, many deaf men tried to sign up anyway.

At least a few made it through the entry tests. John DeLance, a graduate of the North Dakota School for the Deaf and Gallaudet College became a Lieutenant.

Eric Malzkuhn remembers that another Gallaudet student, Archie Stack, served in intelligence and another student from California School for the Deaf worked as an aircraft mechanic.

According to Deaf Heritage a third Gallaudet student-Wayne Schlieff—served in the Mortar Division.
