“I am just proud to be who I am,” says Trix Bruce. “I made the right decisions and have followed my heart … I am proud to be known as a deaf actor.”
Patricia “Trix” Bruce, from Seattle, Washington, is famous nationwide as an American Sign Language (ASL) performer. Bruce’s work has been warmly received everywhere—from local community centers; to state, regional, and the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. conferences; to Deaf Way II.
Bruce has been deaf since she was 6 months old. She attended an oral school. She was mainstreamed into classes with hearing students, and she went to classes with deaf students. She took courses online, too.
After completing her college program, she became involved with interpreting training. Her main area of study has been ASL linguistics, with a focus on ASL performance. She is an approved sponsor for the RID Certificate Maintenance Program and has developed the popular website, www.trixbruce.com.
In The Hearing World Around Me, Bruce tells her life story, explaining what it is like to be a deaf person among hearing people. She shares her most embarrassing moments, learning experiences, and greatest challenges. She also shares her growing sense of pride with her audiences.
Through her performances, deaf and hearing audiences learn about deaf culture in an entertaining way and discover that the hearing and the deaf communities have more in common than what is commonly thought. Bruce impresses audiences at all levels of ASL skill, from novices to fluent experts.
Whether writing, creating, improvising, or starring in her many productions, Bruce’s passion for the dramatic arts shines through. All she asks from her audience is to sit back and relax as she “welcomes you into her world.”
