Russian Deaf Actors Delight Worldwide Audience

By WAY Staff

Four deaf performers, Vassily Solonitsky, Loudmila Romanovskaya, Alexander Filimonov, and Ilya Goltsov, and deaf director Oleg Golovushkin, use the universal language of humor to entertain their audiences and provide glimpses into Russian and deaf cultures as members of TOYS Theater, an internationally acclaimed group that was first formed in 1985 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The performers use mime and gesture enhanced by rhythms to delight audiences of all ages. They have performed all over the world, including Finland, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland. They have also performed for the National Association of the Deaf, as well as at the Russian Cultural Centre and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
