Fall 2006 Course Descriptions

Introduction to Blackboard- RESCHEDULED Oct. 26th
Most people have heard about Blackboard, but do you know what it is? Blackboard is a web content management system. What would you use it for: put your syllabus, class schedule/calendar, and homework on-line, create tests on-line, check for plagiarism, discussion forums, extra storage space for your files, communicate with students, gradebook, and much more!

Flickr - CANCELLED
Flickr is an online image management and photo sharing application where you can store, sort, search and share your photos online. There is a huge mass of photos in the world, and Flickr provides a way to organize yours. Flickr is free and its fun! Come to this training to learn what Flickr is all about and how you can use it to manage your classroom photos. Be sure to sign up for Flickr Toys, too.

Microsoft Word Horizontal Ruler - Oct. 24th
There is one area in Word where you can quickly set up margins, tab stops, and hanging indents: the horizontal ruler. The horizontal ruler is the bar across the top of your Word document with measurements marked out on it. Many people ignore it and use the various dialog boxes instead. But once you know how to use it, you'll wonder how you ever coped without it.

MS Word Table of Contents/Index - Nov. 9th
A table of contents, or TOC, gives readers a brief outline of the topics discussed in a document and helps them find their way around it. An index lists the terms and topics discussed in a document, along with the pages they appear on.

Flickr Toys - Nov. 14th
Flickr is an online image management and photo sharing application where you can store, sort, search and share your photos online. Learn how you can make motivational posters, magazine covers, trading cards, comic book pages and much more with your Flickr photos or your own saved photos.

Stop Motion Animation - Nov. 16th
Learn how to make animated movies. You won’t believe how simple it is!! It’s fun and educational. Use claymation for math word problems, creative writing, story comprehension, chemical reactions, models of cells, reenact significant moments in history, model life in another culture, or whatever you can imagine.

Flash Intro - Nov. 28st
Would you like to make those animations you always see on webpages? Are your PowerPoint presentations lacking finesse? Can’t find the animated gif you’re looking for? Do you want to add creativity to your lessons, but you don’t have a lot of time to spend developing videos and animations? Try Flash. It’s quick, easy, and brings new life to old presentations.

Cool Features of Excel - Dec. 6th

  • Freeze -- keep spreadsheet titles in sight by freezing or locking them in place. That way, after you scroll past the first row or two, you won't have to guess what data refers to or keep scrolling back up the page to see the titles again .
  • Compare -- compare the content in two different workbooks at the same time.
  • Use status bar for quick calculations -- you'll learn where to find Excel's super-fast automatic sums and more, such as calculating the average, minimum, or maximum value in a range of numbers.
  • Auto fill -- Tired of typing the same lists over and over again, or copying and pasting lists from one place to another? Instead, let Excel fill in the months of the year, days of the week, and even your schools student or employee names. You'll learn how to use the fill handle to complete lists after you type one or two entries.
  • Conditional formatting -- to make certain values jump right out at you when the conditions are right.

Digital Storytelling: Photo Story - Dec. 12th
Create your own photo story with the free application Microsoft Photo Story. You can add special effects, titles, captions, music, and your own voice narration to your photo story. Please have your own photos saved to CD or h: drive to be used for this training.

Digital Storytelling: Movie Maker - Dec. 14th
Create a movie using your own photos and words with the free application Windows MovieMaker. You can add titles, captions, effects, transitions, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your movie. Please have your own photos saved to CD or h: drive to be used for this training. Note: this training will not include digital video editing.
