HistoryWired, A Few of Our Favorite Things
http://historywired.si.edu/index.html
In addition to singing with Julie Andrews about "A Few of My Favorite
Things," we can now take a virtual tour through the National Museum
of American History where you'll find hundreds of 'favorite things' from
the museum's collection, many currently not on display. The site is well
organized by date and subject. Who knows, you might find something besides
'whiskers on kittens' to sing about.
Figure This!
http://www.figurethis.org/
Although developed to provide interesting math challenges to families
of middle school students, this resource can also work in schools. Three
to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each
month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints
and complete solutions, along with related problems.
Poetry Express
http://www.poetryexpress.org/
15 Poems You Can Write Now is a great resource for teachers looking for
poetry activities. Most of the activities have good examples for students,
while leaving room for creativity and spirit. The area for sharing gives
ideas for conversation starters when talking about poetry, and the first
steps of criticism (at its most positive).
Rubistar
http://rubistar.4teachers.org/
Create your own rubrics (scoring tools) for Projects, Multimedia, Research
& Writing, or Work Skills quickly and easily. This online tool, developed
by the High Plains Regional Technology in Education Consortium, makes
developing rubrics a snap. Built-in features let you go back and edit
or customize your rubrics, and gives you a URL so parents and students
can view or print the rubrics anywhere.
Kids Who Read
http://kwr.co-nect.net/
This is billed as the largest book club in the world. Students nominate
and vote for their favorite book during November 2001 (voting will take
place in early December). There are areas to get to know more about some
favorite authors, and a literacy curriculum area for teachers.
