Support Services

Audiology & Speech/Language

Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf provide a wide variety of audiological services focused on meeting the developmental needs of the students from birth through high school. Services are also provided for students who have cochlear implants or students and families who are in the cochlear implant candidacy process.

Audiologists are part of the Student Services Team which includes a wide array of specialists from a variety of disciplines. The audiologists in both schools collaborate to promote a continuity of services to support communication development for students during their tenure in the Clerc Center. Each audiologist is assigned to manage the audiological needs of the academic teams. The audiologists are actively involved with the daily activities of the students on their academic teams. This involvement provides a unique opportunity for audiologists to develop a familiarity with students to see how audiological services and recommendations directly impact on a student in their environment.

Kendall Demonstration Elementary School

Audiologists available at Kendall School manage service provision for students on the Early Childhood Education Team (ECE), Team 1/2/3, Team 4/5 and Team 6/7/8. The audiologists provide ongoing services related to hearing evaluation, cochlear implant/hearing aid maintenance and repair which requires extensive agency and family contacts. Cochlear Implant mapping equipment is available to monitor student CI programming. The audiologists collaborate with the students’ CI Medical Center to assist in ongoing management of their CI mapping needs.

Audiologists work closely with the speech/language communication specialists to evaluate a child’s functional skills related to listening and speechreading, and to develop goals during IEP or IFSP planning. They provide resource assistance for communication development strategies and activities.

During the early years, the audiologist works closely with each child’s teacher, speech/language communication specialist and family to develop and implement a plan to assist in defining a child’s hearing potential, determining the role of listening and speech communication, determining the benefit of a hearing aid, managing middle ear problems, and providing direct auditory and speech skills development training. At this stage in a child’s program, audiological services may require a significant amount of time due to the numerous evaluations and family interactions that are needed to provide a good foundation for the child’s overall educational planning and communication skill development. Once a student’s hearing levels are confirmed , annual evaluation is provided to students to confirm the stability of hearing levels.

When the student reaches the 4/5 and 6/7/8 teams, confirmation of hearing levels is completed every two years unless a child’s specific history warrants increased testing. If a student uses hearing aids, an unaided and unaided evaluation is completed each year or more often as needed, to assure that the aid continues to meet the child’s needs and is functioning properly. Evaluations to choose new hearing aids are provided when needed. As the child progresses in the program, greater emphasis is placed on facilitating independence with use and care of the hearing aid and helping the child understand their hearing levels. To accomplish this, individual and group sessions are provided to students by the audiologist regarding understanding the hearing process and individual hearing levels, as well as care, maintenance and troubleshooting of hearing aids. Family contacts are numerous to facilitate carryover of knowledge and skills into the home.

Model Secondary School for the Deaf

A full range of clinical audiology services are provided and aimed at meeting the needs of high school students. Audiologic/ Technology assessments are completed for all graduating seniors to assist them in their transitions to college and/or work. Hearing aid evaluation and hearing aid management services are also available to all MSSD students. Services for students with cochlear implants are also extended to the high school level. Extensive contact with parents and outside agencies are provided to facilitate the audiology services.
