Peer Mediation Program
The MSSD Peer Mediation program, operated by Residence Education, is based on the belief that high school students are capable of becoming self-actualizing individuals, and have the capacity to share this experience with others. Students must be recommended for Peer Mediation and are selected through a formal interview process that includes role-playing and an orientation workshop.
The Peer Mediation program training process offers many benefits for students as Peer Mediators; they:
- become excellent role models
- create positive peer pressure
- begin to take more interest in the well-being of their schools
- develop interpersonal skills that will be valuable throughout their lives.
- find their confidence and self-esteem enhanced.
- acquire paraprofessional experience through training and the mediation process
While Peer Mediators serve as peer counselors for MSSD students, they attend weekly meetings, training, and group process sessions on a rotating basis. Peer Mediators serve as peer counselors in the dormitories, are expected to encourage a sense of community in residence halls, run group meetings, provide educational or recreational workshops, and serve as student role models to the MSSD community.
