Shawn Neal Mahshie has conducted two studies to gather information
about bilingual education of Deaf children in Denmark and Sweden, countries
that began providing academic instruction in Sign Language in the early
1980s. Her book, Educating Deaf Children Bilingually (Mahshie,
1995), has received national attention in the United States and is being
translated into several languages. Ms. Mahshie, who has a B.A. in Elementary
Education and an M.A. in Linguistics, taught for a number of years before
going to work under William Stokoe and Dennis Cokely in Gallaudet's Linguistics
Research Laboratory. She later became coordinator of research publications
in the Gallaudet Research Institute and has worked as managing editor for
Gallaudet University's Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center since
1991. Last modified July 14, 1997 Copyright © 1997 All Rights Reserved Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center
