The following Web sites are highly recommended by Barbara Leutke-Stahlman, PhD, director of Deaf Education in the School of Allied Health, and Diane Nielsen, reading professor in the Department of Learning and Teaching in the College of Education, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, in Kansas City, Kansas. Children's LiteratureThe University of Calgary through its library maintains an excellent resource literacy site. Over half a million people visited the site last year to explore features such as "Authors on the Web," "Stories on the Web," "Resources for Teachers, Parents, and Storytellers," "Book Discussion Groups," and children's literature organizations. The address: http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/. ReferenceERIC, the well-known and long-time Web-based resource, maintains the Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication. The site is dedicated to providing educational materials, services, and coursework to teachers and other individuals interested in language arts. Topics include: "Digests," "Parents and Children Together on Line," "Family Involvement Workshops," and "On-line Sources for Children's Stories." When the homepage comes up, click on publication, then on A to Z index, and finally R, Reading. Links are numerous and interesting. For example, there is the full report and new book Preventing Reading Difficulties, edited by C. Snow. There is also the full text of other articles for teachers, parents, and students. At Gallaudet University's Pre-College National Mission ProgramsThe Pre-College National Mission Programs (Clerc Center) at Gallaudet University maintains an informative literacy web site. The site offers information on Clerc Center literacy-related materials, as well as links to sites around the nation where work is being done with deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
