Gallaudet Board of Trustee Members
Take the MSSD Technology Tour

At a previous meeting of the Gallaudet Board Of Trustees, the Board asked to see how technology is being integrated into the classroom instruction at the Clerc Center. MSSD’s Team 10 invited the Board to view two ways they are using technology. On Thursday, February 7, 2003, between 2:00 pm and 3:20 pm, three smaller groups of Board members dropped into Jennie Vaccaro’s classroom for a hands-on experience with technology and learning. This Web page documents the experience.

Activity #1 - AphaSmarts in the English Classroom

Through a grant from the Higgs Family Foundation, Team 10 received 10 AlphaSmarts. Team 10 teacher Margaret Klotz uses the AlphaSmarts with her students for taking notes, typing up initial drafts of papers and others purposes. They come in very handy when there are not enough computers available for all of the students to use at the same time or for trips to the MSSD library for research.

Steven explains the use of the AlphaSmart to Board Members.

Steven explains that the AlphaSmart is a portable word processor with 8 files. Each file can hold up to 12.5 pages. The AlphaSmart has a spelling checker and a calculator. Its files can be uploaded to a computer for use in a word processor, an email, a PowerPoint presentation, etc.

Board Members Dr. Benjamin Soukup, Jr and Dr. Carol Padden and Gallaudet’s Special Assistant to the President for Planning Mr. Fred Weiner listen and learn.

Board members are asked to type one sentence each sharing what they know about the Middle Ages.

Board member Ms. Susan Dickinson passes her AlphaSmart to teammate and Board member Dr. David Stewart so that he can type in his sentence about the Middle Ages.

Glenn Anderson types on the AlphaSmart

Chairman of the Board, Dr. Glenn Anderson works hard on his sentence with encouragement from Board member Ms. Pamela Holmes.

Steven uploads the text from the AlphaSmart to the laptop.

While the teams continue to type in their sentences on the Middle Ages, Steven prepares the cables and the laptop for the upload.

The AlphaSmart is connected to the computer by a wire. Steven pushes a key to send the text into the Microsoft Word program on the laptop. The student can now further edit the document, adding graphics, highlighting words, etc. The text could also have been imported into an email message or any other program that accepts text.

This is how the text looks when it comes into Microsoft Word. The student can now manipulate his original text using the power of this advanced word processor.

Activity #2 - Jeopardy – Fun and Learning in Social Studies

There are several game templates that have been created for use with Microsoft PowerPoint. One of those is Jeopardy. Team 10 teacher Jennie Vaccaro uses the game to reinforce Social Studies content with her students.

Jennie Introduces the students.

Phuong introduces herself and the topic.

Jennie Vaccaro introduces two students     Phuong talks about Jeopardy game

Team 10 Teacher Jennie Vaccaro introduces students Steven Santiago and Phuong Dang. Steven and Phuong will serve as presenters and then as the game show hosts.

Phuong explains that she grew up in Viet Nam and has just recently come to MSSD where she is learning ASL (American Sign Language). She tells the Board that they will learn about the use of the Jeopardy game in the Team 10 classroom.

Steven explains what Jeopardy is and why they use it.

Steven presents Steven continues to present

Stephen explains how the game is played. There are columns with categories and rows with dollar amounts. The higher the dollar amount, the harder the question. Each team takes a turn, picking a column and a row, reading the question, then coming up with the correct answer in 10 seconds or less. A correct answer (as determined by the game show hosts) earns the designated amount for that question. The team with the most money wins.

Steven explains that the game makes learning fun. It is not just playing around. It reinforces the concepts studied in Social Studies class. Steven also explains that the game can be used for any content area. Teacher or students can feed in the questions and answers.

Phuong tells the materials/equipment that are needed.

Phuong continues the explanation

Phuong explains that you need paper and easel to keep score, a laptop and a digital projector to project the game (a SMART Board is nice, but not necessary), and PowerPoint with the Jeopardy game template.

Board members and Gallaudet administrators play the game.

King Jordan Team 2

Gallaudet President I. King Jordan asks teacher Jennie Vaccaro a question.

Team 2 looks happy about the question and their answer.

Dr. David Stewart and Dr. Susan Dickinson

Board members Ms. Susan Dickinson and Dr. David Stewart choose their category.

Board members and Gallaudet administrators enjoy getting the right answer, too!

Phuong Ms. Celia May Baldwin and Mr. Ken Livinson

Team 10’s “Vanna White” (aka Phuong) cheers the team for a correct answer.

Board member Ms. Celia May Baldwin explains what the Crusades were.

Dr. Anderson and Ms. Holmes   Dr. Jane Fernandes

Board members Dr. Glenn Anderson and Ms. Pamela Holmes are elated at getting the answer correct!

Another happy team!

Summary

These were just two examples of how teachers and staff are integrating technology into the instructional process at the Clerc Center. More ideas can be found in the TecEds Web pages.

Three resources on these pages:

  1. TecEds Reviews – an online database with reviews of software packages used by teachers and staff with their deaf and hard of hearing students.
  2. TecEds Activities – a database with activities integrating technology into the interactions with deaf and hard of hearing students.
  3. TecEds Training Materials – All electronic training materials created for TecEds training sessions are posted online, along with projects created by the trainees. As additional training occurs at the Clerc Center for Clerc Center personnel, those training materials are added to this site. Users are encouraged to use these training material for their own learning, for training others, for classroom use.
    1. PowerPoint Game Show Templates - One of the training materials relates to the PowerPoint Game templates. This documentation includes links to the Jeopardy template demonstrated in this Board of Trustees presentation as well as several other useful templates.
