In response to a requirement of the Education of the Deaf Act that requires the Clerc Center to set priorities for research, demonstration, and dissemination, the Clerc Center solicits public input at several different levels. These range from the general identification of national mission priorities to development of detailed research and demonstration agendas for these priorities. In 1995, with input from the Clerc Center's National Mission Advisory Panel and other public comment, the Clerc Center made the decision to focus its research and dissemination initiatives on literacy for all children, education of families with deaf and hard of hearing students, and transition to the world of work and postsecondary study. The N-MAP consists of 15 members who are representative of educators and administrators of programs serving deaf and hard of hearing students in different educational settings, including public and center schools; parents; members of the deaf community; and alumni of the elementary and secondary demonstration schools. As specific projects are developed and implemented, public input about specific needs within the priority areas is solicited from a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders. These include experts in the priority areas, educators and parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, members of the Deaf community, representatives of national organizations in deafness, university faculty, and programs serving deaf and hard of hearing children. |
