Shared Reading Project

SRP at the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School

The Shared Reading Project was set up in Hawaii in 1993, and then moved to the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) in Washington, DC, in 1995. Since then, the Shared Reading Project tutors have been working with parents and caregivers and their families.

In 2002-2003, 10 deaf tutors and 15 families were involved in the project. Of those 15 families, eight were African American, four were Caucasian, and three were Latino/a.

During the 2003-2004 session, we have eight well-trained tutors and 15 motivated families. The tutors have been working with the families since November 2003. This includes nine African American families, four Latino/a families, and two Caucasian families.
