We have some money from a grant. We would like to have
you or other persons from the Clerc Center set up the Shared Reading
Project in our area. Will you do this? (L.M., Illinois)
The Shared Reading Project started in Hawaii, and then moved to
the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University.
It expanded to 5 other sites in 1997. Now, the Shared Reading Project
can be set up in other schools and programs. To do this, you will
need to attend a 5-day training put on by the Laurent Clerc National
Deaf Education Center. Contact the Office of Training and Professional
Development at 202-651-5855 (TTY/V) or send an email to training.clerccenter@gallaudet.edu.

Can we order the book bags so that we can set up our own
Shared Reading Project in our area? (R.M., Texas)
Yes, you can order the bookbags. They include a book, a videotape,

I am a childcare worker. I can sign okay ... not great,
but okay. I would like to read more to the deaf child in my class.

You might want to read the manuals and look at the videos of two
products. Reading
to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults shows how Deaf parents
read to their Deaf children and it explains 15 principles that all
parents and caregivers can use to help deaf children understand
the stories. Read
It Again and Again shows how to read the same book over and
over again, helping children to go from reading to writing. Both

Our program would like to write a grant very similar to
your Shared Reading Project to be shared with our area. Your program
sounds like an ideal project to develop within our area ... all
areas for that matter. Your project is copyrighted. Would it be
all right if we used your ideas to develop a project like this in
our area? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. The Shared Reading Project logo and concept are part of the
Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center.
We will wait and set the program up in a year. But for

I am interested in some kind of training for our Deaf Mentors
in teaching families how to read to their children in Vermont and
Maine. I have been using your videotape and materials, but I am
just one person ... and need help. (A.P., Vermont)
The Clerc Center has workshops and training that might help. The
workshops include a three-hour or a six-hour workshop on "Reading
to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults." If you are interested
in attending or hosting a workshop, please contact the Office

The "Shared Reading Project: Keys to Success" is a five-day
training on how to set up the Shared Reading Project in your area.
