ABOUT THE FEDERAL PROGRAM
Reading
is Fundamental (RIF), started in 1966, is the largest non-profit
family literacy organization in the country. Its purpose is to provide
free books for children to promote literacy. It gives away 16 million
books to 23,000 sites and five million children annually.
ABOUT THE LOCAL PROGRAM
The Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) joined the
RIF program in the summer of 2002 and had its first book distribution
in October 2002 with the guidance of Eloise Molock and Richard Jeffries.
The local RIF program is supported by the Kendall Home and School
Organization (KHSO). The local program provides more than 450 free
books for 150 children annually. Currently, the local program is
under the guidance of Richard Jeffries and Judy Stout.

The Local RIF Program in 2002-03
- Had three book distributions (10/02, 12/02, and 4/03)
- Ordered more than 600 books with federal and KHSO support
- Provided free books to 155 students
- Tied in with family education events during the third book
distribution (4/03)
The Local RIF Program in Summer 2003
- Obtained materials for classroom use from Coca-Cola/RIF Program
- Received 300 free books for classroom use from Coca-Cola/RIF
Program
- Received $800 from Federal RIF for extra book distributions
The Local RIF Program in 2003-04
- Will provide three book distributions (11/03, 12/03, and 4/04
with an additional book distribution possible as soon as there
is a decision as to how to use $800 toward the book distributions)
- Will provide more than 450 free books (additional free books
possible as soon as there is a decision as to how to use $800
toward the book distributions)
- Will provide books for more than 150 KDES students
