Accelerated Reading Program

The Accelerated Reading Program by Renaissance Learning, Inc., is a computerized information system designed to motivate students, increase literature-based reading practice, and provide teachers with detailed and objective instructional data.

What happens in the Accelerated Reading Program?

  1. The student selects and reads a book.
  2. The student takes a quiz on the computer.
  3. The student and teacher both get immediate individualized, constructive feedback to direct on-going reading practice.

This program is currently being used with teams 1 through 12. The response from students, parents, teachers and staff has been very positive. The program has been successful in generating increased enthusiasm for reading. Students are reading more and improving their reading skills.

In addition to Accelerated Reading, we are also using STAR. This is a computerized reading assessment program from the same company. It lets us know the current reading level of our students and their "ZPD", or Zone of Proximal Development. This zone provides the levels from which they should be selecting books to read so that they can be challenged, but not frustrated. Although this test is not normed for deaf students we have found the results to be very useful. Parents can get their child's ZPD from their child's teacher, lead teacher, or by contacting Yetti Sinnreich.

The books we have quizzes for have been color-coded and placed in special sections in the KDES library, MSSD Library and team libraries. The library staff has worked very hard in setting up these special sections. This makes it easier for students to select books on an appropriate level. Thanks in part to the generosity of the Kendall Home School Organization we have been able to substantially expand the title selections we can offer students.

I know that the teachers and parents are enthusiastic about this exciting program. Parents, please make sure that your child is reading their AR (Accelerated Reading) book each night for at least 30 minutes. Your child can read independently, with you, or you can read the book to your child. Just let the teacher know if you helped and how. That way we can take the quiz correctly to correspond to how the book was read.

What follows are links to booklists for which we have Accelerated Reading quizzes. Not all of the titles are available in the school libraries. The lists have been sorted in three different ways, by title, author, reading level. You can print the lists for off-line viewing and for use at your public library and the bookstore.
