Locating Providers of Mental Health Services for People who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Identifying providers of mental health services to deaf people has become easier in recent years, although individuals with the appropriate skills move and programs open and close. Because an increased number of specialty services are available for deaf persons—whether mental health, substance abuse, etc.—and more private practitioners offer counseling to deaf clients, we are identifying a number of resources that can help you begin a search for such services in your locality.

Mental Health Services for Deaf People: A Resource Directory 2003 Edition

This directory identifies mental health programs and services for deaf people in the United States and Canada, including information on services, accreditation, fees, special programs, and accessibility. The directory is intended for use by counselors, private practitioners, clients, program administrators, teachers, and deaf consumers.

National Directory of Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention and Treatment Programs Accessible to the Deaf

This directory, developed from questionnaires sent to agencies and programs in the United States, identifies programs reporting that they are culturally and linguistically accessible to deaf consumers. If you're deaf, use this directory to find the services you or someone you care about needs. If you counsel deaf clients, use it to locate a treatment program in your or a neighboring state, or to consult other resources for information and materials to create your own services for the deaf. Standards of Care for the Delivery of Mental Health Services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons

This document presents a description of the mental health resources and standards of care for deaf and hard of hearing persons. Included in the binder are descriptions of the population, referral into the mental health system, methods of access, specialized services, specialized resources and skills. The appendices include a list of state coordinators of mental health services for deaf and hard of hearing persons, residential facilities for deaf adults, and residential programs for deaf children and adolescents with emotional/behavioral disturbances. State-level and community agencies serving people who are deaf and hard of hearing and community information and referral centers often maintain files on service providers working with specific populations in a state. Contact the following entities in your state. Check you local telephone directory for phone numbers or ask your local librarian for assistance in locating such an agency.

2. State associations of deaf people often publish directories of TTY numbers in the state. The "yellow pages" sections of these directories often identify mental health programs and private practitioners.

This national directory is the world's most comprehensive directory of text telephone (TTY) numbers. Included are residential numbers of TTY users in each state. The business section provides listings by states in such categories as auxiliary (i.e., hearing and speech services), health (including mental health), human resources (including social services), interest groups (including associations and organizations) which can lead you to the professional mental health services you are seeking. Fax numbers, email addresses, information about the internet, relay service numbers, addresses and phone numbers for clubs and organizations serving individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or speech impaired are also included.
