Locating Providers of Mental Health Services for People who are Deaf and Hard of HearingIdentifying providers of mental health services to deaf people has become easier in recent years, although individuals with the appropriate skills move and programs open and close. Because an increased number of specialty services are available for deaf persons—whether mental health, substance abuse, etc.—and more private practitioners offer counseling to deaf clients, we are identifying a number of resources that can help you begin a search for such services in your locality. Mental Health Services for Deaf People: A Resource Directory 2003 EditionThis directory identifies mental health programs and services for deaf
people in the United States and Canada, including information on services,
accreditation, fees, special programs, and accessibility. The directory
is intended for use by counselors, private practitioners, clients, program
administrators, teachers, and deaf consumers. National Directory of Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention and Treatment Programs Accessible to the DeafThis directory, developed from questionnaires sent to agencies and programs
in the United States, identifies programs reporting that they are culturally
and linguistically accessible to deaf consumers. If you're deaf, use this
directory to find the services you or someone you care about needs. If
you counsel deaf clients, use it to locate a treatment program in your
or a neighboring state, or to consult other resources for information
and materials to create your own services for the deaf. The directory
is downloadable and printable by state at: For more information: Standards of Care for the Delivery of Mental Health Services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing PersonsThis document presents a description of the mental health resources and
standards of care for deaf and hard of hearing persons. Included in the
binder are descriptions of the population, referral into the mental health
system, methods of access, specialized services, specialized resources
and skills. The appendices include a list of state coordinators of mental
health services for deaf and hard of hearing persons, residential facilities
for deaf adults, and residential programs for deaf children and adolescents
with emotional/behavioral disturbances. The directory is downloadable
at: Copies are available for purchase from: Other possible contacts for this kind of information1. State-level and community agencies serving people who are deaf and hard of hearing and community information and referral centers often maintain files on service providers working with specific populations in a state. Contact the following entities in your state. Check you local telephone directory for phone numbers or ask your local librarian for assistance in locating such an agency.
2. State associations of deaf people often publish directories of TTY numbers in the state. The "yellow pages" sections of these directories often identify mental health programs and private practitioners. 3. 2003 TDI National Directory & Resource Guide Copies are available for purchase from: Ask your local librarian about obtaining the directories identified
above through InterLibrary Loan services. |
