Growing Up Without Hearing (Series 1)

INTRODUCTION
When you first meet a hearing impaired boy or girl, you will notice some things that are different. Hearing impaired children usually wear hearing aids. Some my talk in sign language. Their speech may sound different.
People use different words to talk about people who have hearing losses. Hearing Impaired refers to any kind of hearing loss, from great to small. Deaf refers only to a very great loss. Hard of Hearing refers to losses which are not as great. Whether children are deaf or hard of hearing, they are called hearing impaired. And in some ways their lives will be different from yours.
Perhaps there is a hearing impaired chid in your neighborhood or school. You may wonder, "What's it really like to have a hearing loss?" This booklet tells about the everyday life of some hearing impaired boys and girls. The children in this book go to different kinds of schools. Kate goes to a residential school for deaf children. Willie attends a day school. Maria is in a day class. And Brian is main streamed in a hearing classroom. Some of these schools are only for deaf students. Other schools have both hearing and deaf students. Some hearing impaired children use sign language and others do not.
What is different about the school lives of hearing impaired children? What kind of things are the same for them as for you? What is life like at home for hearing impaired children? Let's find out about Kate, Willie, Maria, and Brian.
