Deaf Culture Videotapes
This list identifies videotapes specifically about deaf culture and deaf
history currently known to the Gallaudet University Library, and to the
National Deaf Education Network and Clearinghouse. For easy reference
the list is presented in four sections:

I. DEAF CULTURE
American Folklore in the Deaf Community
(56 minutes, silent, signed: 1981)
Deaf jokes, personal experiences, and sign lore by famous deaf person,
Directed by Simon Carmel.

ASL Across America
(6 videotapes, 60 minutes each; 1992)
Features Deaf people in natural, unrehearsed conversations. Participants
provide a balance of age, gender, and educations. Topics featured are
regional sign variations, personal school experiences, education of deaf
children, and past, presents and future of Deaf Clubs, located in Philadelphia,
San Francisco, Detroit, Albuquerque, Seattle, and St. Paul. All may be
purchased individually or in sets of three or six.

Deaf Culture Autobiographies

Deaf adult role models, share their stories of success. The eight videotapes
feature Gilbert Eastman, M.J. Bienvenu, Alfred Sonnenstrahl, Paul Johnston
Ph.D., Rev. Thomas Coughlin, Dennis Schemenauer, Patrick Graybill, and
Howie Seago. These are recommended as "video-text" for learning
deaf culture.

Search for Vision: Deaf Artist in Profile

Viewers will observe and understand the challenges and rewards that artists,
especially deaf artists,face in this personal depiction of career paths
and creative experience. The seven successful artists profiled are Charles
Baird, David Bloch, Morris Broderson, Nancy Cook-Smith, Steven DeShetler,
Kind Hurdelbrink, and Weny Maruyama. This videotape produced at NTID,
received the Award of Excellence for Best Educational/Documentary Film
of 1990 from California’s Media Access Office, Inc.

Several deaf performers share various insights about life in the deaf
world. They get the hearing persons point of view on the same topics.
The resultant program offers much food for thought about these two not-so-different
worlds and the richness to be gained by mutual understanding and continued

strengths, challenges and culture. Provides a strong message in breaking
the stereotype of deaf teens as quiet!

When the Minds hears: A Synopsis in ASL
(Set of 13-1hour-tape voice-over is provided)
Videotapes present a narrative and historical account of deaf education
and location of the stories. Documents bases on Laurent Clerc in France,
American School for the deaf, and Gallaudet University are presented.
These people and places paved the way in bringing education for deaf student
as we know today.

Noted entertainer Pat Graybill’s one-man show offers humorous and touching
insights into life in a residential school dormitory. Included cameo appearance
by others who provide their own recollections of residential school days.

II. DEAF HISTORY
American Schools and the depression
(A series of videotapes, sound, and signed 1991)
Based from a video series from the International Conference on Deaf History
at Gallaudet University, this videotaped seminar discusses social service
for the deaf in the 1930’s and interest group act ivies, including a discussion
on student life at the Indiana School for the deaf.

Class of ‘52
(43 minutes, color, sound, signed, captioned: 1990)
The Kendall School on the campus of Gallaudet University once welcomed
all deaf children who resided within the boundaries of the District of
Columbia. In 1905, Kendall closed its doors to black children, forcing
these children to seek education in neighboring states. This is the story
of those children, their parents, their teachers, and their struggle to
gain admittance to the Kendall School.

Laurent Clerc 1785-1869: A Video Documentary

An historical documentary about a deaf man who brought sign language to
America from France in 1815 and established the first permanent school
for deaf people in America. The tape traces his life, beginning with his
childhood in France, and highlights his achievements as America’s first
deaf teacher.

III. Historical Film Collection of the
National Association of the Deaf
Concerned with the effects of the repression of sign language and of
deaf culture by society and the schools at the turn of the century, and
National Association of the Deaf began a project to capture and preserve
for posterity, valuable records of the American Deaf History, Deaf Culture,
leaders of the Deaf Community, and American Sign Language in the first
half of the of the 20th century. The following 19 films comprise
the national Association of the Deaf historic film collection. Now on
videotape, they are available individually or in volumes of five from
Sign Media.
VOLUME 1: Address and Reminisces
Total time approximately 48 minutes.
The Lorna Doone Country of Devenshire England
(12 min., B & W, silent, signed 1910)
The earliest surviving film in sign language. Dr. Edward Miner Gallaudet,
prominent educator of the deaf and founder of Gallaudet University, lectures
on his visit to England.
Dom Pedro’s Visit to Gallaudet College
(6 min., B&W, silent signed: 1913)
E.A Fay related the story of the Emperor of Brazil’s visit to Gallaudet
and his American Travels, in 1876.
Memories of Old Hartford
(16 min., B & W, silent, signed: 1913)
Dr. John B. Hotchkiss talks of his youth in Hartford, Connecticut in the
"good old days" of the mid-1800s.
An Address at the Tomb of Garfield
(6 min., B & W, silent, signed: 1913)
Willis Hubbard leads a delegation of deaf persons who have come to Washington
for a memorial service at the tomb of the late President James A. Garfield.
Hubbard summarizes Garfield’s life and achievements and speaks on Garfield’s
deep interest in Gallaudet University (then called the Columbia Institution)
and his role in defending the fledgling college against Congressional
opponents and budget-cutters.
Discovery of Chloroform

Dr. George T. Dougherty, a leading chemist in the industrial world and
leader among the deaf, lectures on the chloroform in one of the world’s
first educational films.

A Lay Sermon

A sermon by the Rev. Robert McGregor about the universal brotherhood of
man and the Fatherhood of God. Available in both captioned and uncaptioned
versions.
Gettysburg
(12 min., B & W, silent, signed: 1915)
Shows glimpses of the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,
with the Rev. A.D. Bryant as guide.
VOLUME 3: National Association of the Deaf

An address by B.B Burnes and U.C. Jones on the subject of deaf peoples
upporting the National Association of the Deaf. Also included are scenes
from the Chicago N.A.D Convention of 1937.
19th Triennial Convention, N.A.D
(12 min., B & W, silent, signed: 1940)
Marcus L. Kenner, President of the National Association of the Deaf, speaks
along with James N. Orman, the Vice President. Shows some of the events
that took place at the convention; filmed by Leslie A. Elmer
Some Activities of the Deaf
(12 min., B&W, silent, signed, 1940)
Dr. Tom Anderson discusses the National Association of the Deaf and its
objectives. Includes scenes of the club mobile purchased with money raised
by the National Association of the Deaf and presented to the Red Cross
during World War 11.

The Fanwood Band and Cadets perform; exhibitions by several New York schools

The Chapter from the Life of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.

A scene depicting an incident in the life of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet,
founder of the first permanent school for deaf children in America, at
Hartford, Connecticut. This play, with deaf actors, was never completed.
Convention of the American Instructor of the Deaf
(6 min., B&W, silent, signed: 1914)
Shows the members present at the Convention of American Instructors of
the Deaf in Staunton, Virginia in 1914.
A Plea for a Statue of De l’Epee in America
(6 min., B&W, silent, signed: 1913)
An address read by Rev. McCarthy and interpreted in sign language by Dr.
James H. Cloud. The Abbe de’l Epee was a French cleric who invented the
French (and indirectly, the American) sign language in the late 1700’s.
The Preservation of Sign Language
(16 min., B & W, silent, signed: 1913)
An address by George William Veditz in which he deplores the debasing
of the "pure" sign language and urges its preservation.
