Books for Learning Sign Language

We receive numerous requests from people looking for books suitable to help them learn or improve sign language skills. Although this list is not comprehensive, the sign language books listed are representative of different skill levels.

Learning sign language from a book is difficult. Thus, we encourage you to enroll in sign language classes and to meet deaf people who use sign language. These approaches will enhance the learning experience and provide opportunities to practice and develop fluency in a conversational setting.

Several different sign systems exist. You want to be sure that the class you take offers what you want to learn--American Sign Language; signs in English word order; or a manually coded English system..

The list is available in either Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat PDF.
