The Clerc Center Honors
Program
Program Overview
The Honors Program is designed as a comprehensive K-12 program which addresses the needs of the Clerc Center’s gifted students while providing numerous opportunities for all KDES/MSSD students to grow intellectually through higher-level coursework. The primary goal of the Honors Program is to challenge, stimulate, and motivate as many students as possible through higher-level reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving activities.
Honors Program at KDES
All students at KDES participate in the Honors Program’s Academic Explorations class, which provides students with activities, simulations, puzzles, games, and experiments in the various academic fields. The KDES Honors Lab program also gives gifted students the opportunity to expand and improve literacy skills (reading comprehension, reading analysis, writing, and communication).
Honors Program at MSSD
Students at MSSD can choose from a wide variety of both honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes. MSSD honors classes are essentially preparatory coursework for future AP and/or college courses, and students receive a challenging, in-depth look into the subject matter through a wide variety of higher-level assignments and readings. Advanced Placement courses (designed by the College Board®) are college-equivalent classes which provide the student with an intensive foundation from which to gain competency in a particular discipline. MSSD students are also invited to participate in additional Honors Program events, including weekend programs (including Weekend of Wisdom- “Wise Tips for Taking AP Exams”), guest presentations, field trips, technology initiatives (such as the laptop check-out program and the Honors computer lab), summer programs (including the Summit program), and other academic workshops.
