Cochlear Implants and Sign Language:
Putting It All Together
Identifying Recommended Practices for Educational Settings
April 11-12, 2002
Gallaudet University Kellogg Conference Center
Washington, D.C.
Sponsored by the Cochlear Implant Education Center
Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, Gallaudet University
The Cochlear Implant Education Center was established in Fall, 2000 at
the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center. Among the goals of the
CIEC is the development of effective service models for students with
cochlear implants who are in environments supporting the development of
both spoken language and signed language. As educators in programs for
the Deaf nationwide face the challenge of addressing the specialized needs
of a growing number of students with cochlear implants, we welcome an
opportunity to exchange views, share experiences, identify strategies
and recommendations, and compare outcomes.
How has your program responded to the needs of children with cochlear
implants? What obstacles have you faced or overcome? How are both visual
and auditory learning channels nurtured in the classroom? This working
meeting will serve as a forum for professionals in Deaf education to discuss
and identify effective practices and current recommendations for programming
to meet the educational needs of deaf children with cochlear implants
who utilize sign language in school environments.
